Vikram Bhatt recalls struggling to make '1920' after a series of flops: '‘Sir, yeh kaisi film hai?’

Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt recently opened up about the challenging phase in his career when he decided to make ‘1920‘, a horror film that eventually revived his fading success.
Known for delivering hits like ‘Raaz’, ‘Awara Paagal Deewana’, and ‘Aetbaar’, Bhatt faced a harsh reality when a series of box-office failures left him isolated. In a recent interview with Bharti Singh and Harsh Limbachiya on their YouTube channel, he reflected on the tough journey of ‘1920’ and the lack of support he faced during that time.
After enjoying a successful run at the box office, Bhatt’s career took a downturn when several of his films failed. “In the industry, there is a rule: if you have a couple of bad Fridays, people stop taking your calls,” he revealed, describing how quickly the industry distanced itself when he was struggling. Despite the setbacks, he remained determined to bring 1920 to life, a film he not only directed but also wrote.
The journey to make the film was anything but easy. Bhatt recalled how even those working closely with him doubted the project. His own lightman questioned the film’s potential, asking, “Sir, yeh kaisi film hai? (What kind of film is this?)” Yet, Bhatt remained confident in his vision, believing that 1920 had the power to turn his fortunes around.
However, getting the film to the audience was another uphill battle. Bhatt held around 35 trial screenings, but no studio or producer showed interest in buying or distributing the film. With no other option, he decided to release it himself, a move filled with anxiety and uncertainty.
His perseverance paid off when the film finally hit theaters. On the day of its release, Bhatt received an unexpected call from his father, who urged him to tune in to a radio show where audiences were sharing their opinions. To his relief, the majority of listeners praised the film, giving it a positive verdict. Esteemed critic Ritu Raj even labeled it a “masterpiece,” further cementing the film’s success.
