Sooraj Barjatya reveals his FIRST impression of Salman Khan before 'Maine Pyaar Kiya': 'He didn't look like a hero'

Salman Khan debuted as a lead in Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), but his journey wasn’t easy despite being Salim Khan’s son. Sooraj initially heard about Salman’s acting ambitions but wasn’t impressed when they first met. However, he later decided to cast him in the film.
Salman Khan’s Struggles Despite Being Salim Khan’s Son
In a conversation with Mid-Day, Sooraj shared that he was initially surprised to hear about Salman Khan’s interest in working with him, given his connection to Salim Khan. As a debutant director, Sooraj recalled that Salman had approached the meeting with hesitation, intending to decline the role due to Rajshri’s reputation for portraying saintly protagonists.
Sooraj Barjatya’s First Impression: “He Didn’t Look Like a Hero”
The filmmaker further recalled that his first impression of Salman was far from that of a typical hero, as he appeared shorter than expected. However, Salman’s photographs convinced him otherwise, showcasing his strong screen presence. As the narration of Maine Pyar Kiya progressed, Salman became more engaged, and by the interval, they agreed to collaborate. However, a bigger challenge awaited them afterward.

He also recalled that Salman’s initial screen tests did not go as planned. His voice lacked projection, and even during dance rehearsals with Farah Khan, things didn’t seem to work. However, when Salman was seated with a guitar, his expressions, style, and romance were effortlessly perfect—though speaking remained a challenge. The next hurdle came when they discovered Salman was debuting in a supporting role in Biwi Ho To Aisi.
Why Sooraj Barjatya Ultimately Chose Salman Khan
Barjatya revealed that for six months, Salman kept recommending others for the lead role in Maine Pyar Kiya instead of himself. Even when Sooraj visited him on set to inform him of moving on, Salman had other actors lined up for consideration. However, Salman’s sincerity and selflessness convinced Sooraj to stick with him. He admired how Salman always prioritized the film over himself, a trait he believes remains unchanged even today.

Salman Khan, who last collaborated with Sooraj Barjatya in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), is now gearing up for the release of Sikandar. Directed by AR Murugadoss and co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 30.
