A day after the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that claimed 18 lives, Northern Railway has announced a series of measures to prevent a repeat of the disaster. In a key move, all special trains heading towards Prayagraj will now operate exclusively from Platform 16. Passengers travelling to Prayagraj have been advised to use the Ajmeri Gate entrance to streamline movement and prevent overcrowding on other platforms. Regular trains will continue to depart from their usual platforms as per standard practice.

To further manage the rush, security personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been deployed in greater numbers across the station. These personnel are actively guiding passengers to their designated platforms to ensure smooth boarding and prevent congestion during peak hours.

In response to the overwhelming demand for travel to Prayagraj, Northern Railway operated three special trains by 7 pm yesterday, including one service to Darbhanga via Prayagraj and two direct services to Prayagraj. Another special train is scheduled to depart at 9 pm to accommodate the evening rush. Given the continuing surge in passengers heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela, Indian Railways has scheduled five additional special trains for February 17.

Meanwhile, the Railways’ helpline number 139 remains operational, assisting passengers with inquiries and support. Since the incident, over 130 calls have been received, with railway personnel offering assistance to affected families. Officials accompanied the families of the deceased to their homes and participated in their final rites.

Earlier in the day, Indian Railways announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of each of the 18 deceased. Passengers with grievous injuries received ₹2.5 lakh, while those with minor injuries were compensated with ₹1 lakh.

A two-member high-level committee has begun investigating the circumstances leading to the stampede. The committee comprises Pankaj Gangwar, Principal Chief Security Commissioner, and Nar Singh, Principal Chief Commercial Manager, both senior officers of Northern Railway.
