Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s upcoming film, L2: Empuraan, is setting unprecedented records in advance bookings, reflecting a remarkable surge in audience anticipation. As of March 24 the film has become the second biggest opening for a film in Kerala with over Rs 9 crore collection, the biggest being Thalapahy Vijay’s Leo: Bloody Sweet which minted Rs 12 crore on day 1 in the state.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy when compared to its predecessor, Lucifer, released in 2019. Lucifer garnered Rs 6.1 crore on its opening day, a record at the time. In contrast, L2E: Empuraan has more than doubled this figure, underscoring the sequel’s heightened appeal and the growing market for Malayalam cinema as its total collection as per Track BO currently stands at Rs 13.63 crore including block bookings .
The craze for L2E Empuraan is not limited just to India, even in North America the film has crossed Rs 3 crore mark just for its premiere shows. It has already becoming the biggest Malayalam film in the circuit destroying all previous records.
Several factors contribute to this overwhelming response. Firstly, the success of Lucifer established a strong foundation, creating a loyal fan base eagerly awaiting the sequel. Secondly, the collaboration between Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran has generated significant buzz, given their stature in the industry. The film’s production scale has also played a crucial role, the trailer of the film which was released in 5 languages was very well received.
L2E: Empuraan is also the first Malayalam film to release in IMAX, offering audiences a grand cinematic experience. The extensive shooting across various international locations, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates, adds to its global appeal.
Despite the great buzz down south, the film has received a very wide showcasing in North India and that could be because of Salman Khan’s Sikandar releasing on 30th March on the occasion of Eid. Now all depends on how both the films fare post it’s release and thus the screening would be increased or decreased.
