Director Imtiaz Ali recently shed light on the inspiration behind the emotionally charged breakup party scene in his 2009 film ‘Love Aaj Kal‘. He shared that the scene was inspired by a real-life incident during his college days.
In a recent podcast, Game Changers, Ali revealed that the idea stemmed from an actual breakup party he attended as a student. “I had attended a breakup party in college. Two seniors broke up; they conducted a party. So, art follows life, which follows art. There’s a symbiotic relationship between art and society. Both are necessary for growth,” he shared.
This real-life event ultimately shaped the poignant scene featuring Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan, which became one of the most memorable moments in Bollywood.
The filmmaker also delved into the deep connection between art and society, highlighting how both constantly evolve by influencing each other. According to Ali, this ongoing dialogue between creative expression and cultural shifts is essential for progress. He emphasised how storytelling helps navigate the complexities of the modern world.
Imtiaz also sparked curiosity about a potential sequel to his widely acclaimed film Rockstar. When asked about it, he left the possibility open-ended. He shared that he cannot say it will not happen, but if something wild comes to his mind that is worthy of ‘Rockstar Part 2’, he will surely do it.
‘Love Aaj Kal’ featured Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles, while Rishi Kapoor and Giselli Monteiro played significant characters.
