Germany-headquartered ebm-papst, manufacturer of fans and motors, is expanding its production capabilities in India by establishing a new plant in Chennai entailing investments to the tune of ₹340 crore. The official groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility is scheduled for Friday, April 4, 2025, with company representatives. As part of the planned production expansion, ebm-papst has acquired a 14.2 acre (57,600 m²)of land in Chennai. The first phase of the upcoming construction project comprises an area of 23,000 m² and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Once fully operational, the plant will employ around 700 people.

Sharing some statistics about the company Klaus Geissdoerfer, Chief Executive Officer of the ebm-papst Group said that for the fiscal year 2023-2024 the group’s sales stood at 2,408 million euros. The company has invested around 140.2 million euros in research and development and 9.5 million euros went into sustainability investments. “We are leveraging our glocalization strategy ‘local for local’ to serve the APAC & MEA region with tailored solutions,” he added.

Thomas Nuernberger, Chief Sales Officer of ebm-papst Group and Chief Executive Officer Air Technology APAC & MEA, said: “By localizing production and strengthening supply chains, we are ensuring that we can respond quickly and effectively to the needs of our Indian customers.”

In addition to expanding its production capacity, ebm-papst established a new Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai in 2023. Spanning 2,800 m², this state-of-the-art facility will house 300 specialists dedicated to developing digital solutions for both ebm-papst’s intelligent fan technologies and global processes, supporting the company’s digital transformation in the coming years. Our GCC started two years ago but we have scaled up very fast, said Atul Tripathi, Managing Director of ebm-papst India. He also pointed out that the firm already has plans for phase II expansion in future.

The company entered the Indian market in 1996. In 2005, it began manufacturing BG68 motors in India. By 2010, ebm-papst India became a fully owned subsidiary of the parent company. Currently, the firm has four sales offices, two manufacturing facilities and multiple warehouses, employing around 375 people in India.
