Commuters on social media have raised alarm over unexpected toll deductions via the FASTag system. CNBC Awaaz managing editor Anuj Singhal, in a tweet, said that he was recently charged 900 while travelling on the Samruddhi Expressway. This is significantly higher than the usual 180 toll fee.

Singhal, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), detailed his experience and noted that while entering the toll plaza, the FASTag system successfully registered his vehicle. However, he added, during exit the toll gates were open. This led to the system not recording his exit thus being charged ₹900—the maximum toll charge.

In his tweet, Singhal observed that one can receive refunds upon lodging a complaint. However, drivers might overlook such discrepancies or choose not to pursue refunds, inadvertently bearing the inflated charges.

The issue, however, has affected many drivers and some even expressed frustration over the lack of responsiveness from toll helplines.

One of the users commented that he was charged ₹150 from a toll gate at Bandra-Worli Sea Link for three to four months. He said the ‘bigger frustration’ was that he’s never been to the toll booth. The user said that he kept lodging complaints and getting them reversed.

Another user said that he has noted that a similar practice happens at KMP Expressway, Gurgaon as well. He added that there’s no entry tag, just exit, and they charge a random amount.

Dos and Don’ts for FASTag Users:

To mitigate issues with the toll plazas, the motorists should follow these dos and don’ts:

Dos:

•    Proper Placement: Fix the FASTag inside the windshield, preferably at the back of the rear-view mirror, so that it reads clearly from toll scanners.

•    Check Transactions: Check your FASTag account statements or notifications after travels to ensure accurate toll deductions. Report any discrepancies to the respective customer care at once.

•    Have Sufficient Balance: Keep enough money in your FASTag account to avoid the failure of transactions or fines on toll roads.

•    Maintain Up-to-Date Contact Information: Give correct mobile numbers and email addresses to get instant alerts and updates on your FASTag transactions.

Don’ts:

•    Don’t use more than one FASTag on your vehicle. It can cause double charges and make it hard to manage your account.

•    Don’t mess with the tag once it’s stuck on. Changing its position can cause problems reading it and lead to issues with transactions.

•    Avoid paying cash at ETC lanes meant for FASTag users. If your FASTag is not working, just go to the cash lane to avoid being charged twice.
