Rajya Sabha MP Sharma performed ‘Griha Pravesh’ (housewarming) at his newly allotted residence on Tughlaq Lane on March 6. He prominently displayed the new name on his nameplate, with “Tughlaq Lane” mentioned in brackets below.
“Today, at the new residence located in New Delhi on Swami Vivekananda Marg (Tughlak Lane), I performed the housewarming ceremony with my family, following all the rituals and offering prayers,” he posted on X.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak backed Sharma’s decision. He said, “People knew very well about Mohammed bin Tughlaq, he was a crazy king. By renaming the road after Swami Vivekanand, they have thought of a very good name. Swami Vivekanand took the flag of Bharat Mata to the world.”
Another BJP MP Krishan Pal Gurjar has replaced the signboard outside his residence. The Faridabad MP and the Minister of State for Cooperation also renamed the lane as Swami Vivekananda Marg.
“Swami Vivekanand is an ideal for the youth of this country. Hundreds of years ago in Chicago, he made a place for India before the world in ‘Dharm Sansad’. Such great personalities are the ideals of this country and sentiments of the country are attached to them…So, I changed the nameplate to Swami Vivekanand Marg…” Gurjar told reporters.
In 2015, Tughlaq Road in the national capital was renamed Abdul Kalam Road to honour former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam following his death. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) approved the change in August that year. Previously, the road was named after Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, the founder of the Tughlaq dynasty.
