The video message
In the nearly seven-minute-long video, Sharma expressed his anguish over his marital issues, claiming that his wife was involved with someone else. He pleaded for authorities to strengthen legal protections for men, warning that they were becoming increasingly vulnerable in society.
“This is for the authorities. The law needs to protect men … My wife was involved with another man… But what can I do? It does not matter anymore,” he said.
“Please think about men. I’m sorry, everyone … They become very lonely. Everything will get better once I go. I have attempted suicide even before,” he added, showing scars on his wrist from previous self-harm attempts.
Towards the end of the video, he made a final plea: “Don’t touch my parents after my death.”
Police investigation and delayed action
The video came to the attention of Agra Police on 27 February through social media. DCP Agra Suraj Rai stated, “Taking cognisance of the video, a case was registered under relevant sections in connection with a complaint.” He assured that all facts and allegations would be investigated, and action would be taken based on evidence.

Earlier, Sharma’s family had attempted to file a case at Sadar Bazaar Police Station, but officers allegedly refused, citing their Maha Shivratri duties. The family then escalated the matter to the Chief Minister’s portal, prompting action. On Thursday night, a case was registered based on a WhatsApp complaint, and a formal investigation was launched.
Family’s allegations
Sharma’s father, Narendra Kumar Sharma, a retired Indian Air Force officer, told ETV Bharat that his son was struggling with marital troubles. He alleged that Manav had been receiving threats from his wife, warning him of false legal cases, which left him feeling trapped.
A day before his death, Sharma had travelled from Mumbai to Agra with his wife and dropped her off at her maternal home, his father said. The family believes the mental stress caused by his relationship issues ultimately drove him to take the extreme step.
Wife’s counter-allegations
Sharma’s wife, Nikita Sharma, refuted the accusations, claiming that Manav had a history of alcohol abuse and violent behaviour.
“The day he died by suicide, he had dropped me at my maternal home. Whatever claims he has made about me, it is about my past. It is not related to anything after our marriage,” she told ETV Bharat.

She further claimed that Sharma had attempted suicide multiple times before, and she had intervened at least three times to save him. “I pulled him back from the edge and brought him here. But in the end, he was the one who left me at my parents’ house,” she said.
She also alleged that Sharma’s family ignored his mental health struggles, despite her informing them about his repeated self-harm attempts.
The FIR, filed at Sadar Bazaar Police Station, mentions strained relations between the deceased and his wife, according to news agency ANI. The police have assured that they are examining both the family’s allegations and the wife’s claims.
The case has reignited discussions on mental health, marital disputes, and legal protections for men in India.
