Sooraj Barjatya is getting decent reviews for his OTT debut series, Bada Naam Karenge (BNK), and in a recent interview, the director shared insights about his missteps while making the Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan-starrer ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon‘.
In a conversation with DNA India, Sooraj discussed his decision to bring a family-centric narrative to OTT. When asked about the feedback he has received for ‘Bada Naam Karenge’, Sooraj couldn’t hide his delight. He shared that he is feeling the same happiness he experienced after the success of his debut venture, ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. The late-night calls from people across the nation, from different age groups, appreciating his work during his debut directorial venture, came back to him like a flash while receiving good reviews for ‘Bada Naam Karenge’.
Sooraj also revealed that ‘Bada Naam Karenge’ was originally conceived as a film back in 2013. However, over the years, the idea took shape as a web series. The ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ director admitted that some people were sceptical about his foray into digital entertainment. As family-oriented movies are not widely available on OTT platforms, he believed it would work for them. However, he also added that he was a bit uneasy about the kissing scene between Ritik Ghanshani and Ayesha Kaduskar’s characters in the series.
During the shooting of the series, he was at his office, contemplating whether the scene was necessary. He later expressed his concerns to director Palash Vaswani but ultimately found the final edit to be highly appropriate.
Sooraj’s initial hesitation about the kiss stemmed from his own experience with ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon‘, where he had attempted a different take on romance. He now acknowledges that the experiment did not work as intended. “Maine Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon mein kiya tha yeh, and I got a lot of flack for it. I realised I did not capture romance poetically because, somewhere along the way, I wanted to sensationalise these things, and I got flack for the same. But credit goes to Palash for doing it with dignity,” he stated.
‘Bada Naam Karenge (BNK)’ is directed by Palash Vaswani, with Sooraj Barjatya as the showrunner of the series.
