Speaking at TiE Con Mumbai 2025, Murthy criticised the trend of companies branding conventional programs as AI. “I think somehow it has become a fashion in India to talk of AI for everything. I have seen several normal, ordinary programs touted as AI,” he said.
Murthy went on to explain the fundamentals of AI, differentiating between machine learning and deep learning. He described machine learning as large-scale correlation based on data, while deep learning mimics human brain functions by handling “unsupervised algorithms.” The latter, he said, has far greater potential to replicate human behaviour.
“But what I am seeing being called AI is silly, old programs,” he added, pushing back against exaggerated AI claims.
Meanwhile, Infosys has been working on small language models (SLMs) using open-source components and proprietary data. The company has also focused on Generative AI (Gen AI), developing SLMs tailored for specific industry applications and use cases.
