The festival honours the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. One of the significant festivals in Hinduism, Mahashivratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Phalgun month of the Hindu lunar calendar
Celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Phalgun month of the Hindu lunar calendar, it is one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism.
On this day, banks, courts, schools, stock markets and other public institutions are usually closed in more than a dozen states. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s public holiday calendar, states like Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka will observe a bank holiday on Mahashivratri 2025.
Benchmark indices are currently trading flat ahead of the mid-week holiday with the Nifty struggling to cross the 22,600 mark on the upside.
The listless trading session so far comes after a sharp sell-off on Monday, which resulted in the Nifty breaking a crucial support of 22,800 on the downside. The decline was due to a break in key technical support and weak global cues, with broader markets also down.
While the Indian stock exchanges remain closed tomorrow for the Mahashivratri holiday, global markets will focus on Nvidia’s earnings, among other factors, which could influence market sentiment going forward.
