Experts recommend reviewing policies regularly to ensure adequate coverage against these risks.
Essential insurance policies for disaster protection
“To protect against losses from natural disasters, fire insurance for both residential and commercial properties is essential,” said Subramanyam Brahmajosyula, Chief Product & Marketing Officer, SBI General Insurance.
“This covers calamities like floods, landslides, and storms, which fall under Act of God (AOG) perils. Individuals should also ensure their health and motor insurance is up to date.”
Home insurance policies often include coverage for natural disasters, but policyholders should check for exclusions and coverage limits.

Motor insurance can also protect against damages caused by extreme weather conditions.
How to choose the right coverage
Selecting the right insurance depends on location-based risks.
“If you live in an area prone to floods or earthquakes, prioritise insurance that provides adequate protection for your home, vehicle, and personal well-being,” Brahmajosyula advised.
“Regular policy reviews and consultations with insurers help ensure that coverage aligns with evolving risks.”
Many policies offer add-ons to enhance protection.
For example, flood insurance can be included in home insurance, and comprehensive motor insurance can cover weather-related damages.
Financial preparedness tips for individuals and businesses
Proper financial planning can minimise the impact of natural disasters.
“Secure appropriate insurance that covers your home, motor, and health, tailored to the regional risks,” Brahmajosyula suggested.
For businesses, he emphasised the need for comprehensive property insurance, including business interruption coverage.
“Maintain an inventory of assets, document preventive measures, and review the sum insured and policy exclusions,” he added.
Having an emergency fund is also critical.
“Set aside funds for unexpected expenses, report damages promptly, and follow claim procedures for quick settlements,” he advised.
