Musk has long championed AI’s predictive capabilities, and in one of his past seminars, he remarked, “Probably the right metric for intelligence is the ability to predict the future.” While he made this statement long before the Oscars, he now suggests that Grok’s accurate predictions reinforce his belief in AI’s ability to foresee outcomes.

Grok3, the latest iteration of Musk’s AI project under xAI, was introduced on February 18. Designed to push the boundaries of human understanding, the chatbot boasts unprecedented computational power and creativity. Musk has frequently highlighted its advancements, positioning Grok as a tool that not only processes vast amounts of information but also comprehends it in ways that mimic human intuition.
The chatbot’s name, Grok, originates from Robert Heinlein’s classic science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land. In the book, the term means to fully and profoundly understand something—an ability Musk claims is crucial for AI.
“Empathy is an important part of that,” Musk noted, underscoring the connection between understanding and compassion that Grok3 aims to embody.
With Musk claiming Grok accurately predicted the Oscars, debates over AI’s ability to forecast human decisions have reignited. Some see it as a breakthrough, while others question whether it was simply a fortunate coincidence.
