Atlee’s ‘Baby John,’ featuring Varun Dhawan, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Keerthy Suresh, has been officially released on digital screens.
The film made it to OTT on February 19, 2025. The most awaited film was earlier available for rent at Rs 249, but it is now available to watch for all the subscribers of Amazon Prime Video only.
Despite creating buzz among the audience with the action-packed trailer, and making appearances in the interviews, the film managed to get quite a few eyeballs. While the makers had greater expectations with the Christmas release, the film reportedly failed to gain attention and saw a run at the bigger screens for just 20 days.
Plot of the film
The story revolves around Varun Dhawan’s character, John D’Silva/ DCP Satya Verma, who leads a double life to protect his daughter from his former enemy. The former cop, who runs a bakery shop, is a loving father to his daughter Khushi (Zara Zyanna). Khushi’s teacher, Tara (Wamiqa Gabbi), saves a young girl from being trafficked by taking her to the police station, coincidentally in John’s van. With her wit, she finds out about the former life of John. However, his identity is exposed to his enemy, Nana (Jackie Shroff).
According to the ETimes review, “Throughout its runtime of two hours and forty-one minutes, the tracks of John’s past and present-day struggles don’t always feel cohesive, affecting the movie’s overall engagement.” Adding to the review, “The movie has its moments as an actioner, but in terms of content and narrative, it could have been more impactful.”
‘Baby John’ is a remake of 2016’s Tamil blockbuster film, ‘Theri,’ featuring Thalapathy Vijay, Amy Jackson, and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Atlee’s ‘Baby John might have received mixed reviews from the critics and audience, however, the film has enjoyed the appreciation for cinematography, sleek camera angles, and stylish action throughout the film.
