Mukherjee, who joined NMDC as Director (Finance) in November 2018, had been serving as the company’s acting CMD since March 2023. In addition to his leadership role at NMDC, he is also the Chairman of NMDC Steel Limited and Legacy Iron Ore Limited.
A Cost Accountant and a 1996-batch officer of the Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS), Mukherjee has held key positions within the Government of India, playing a pivotal role in the country’s industrial and economic development. Under his leadership, NMDC made history in FY24 by becoming the first iron ore mining company in India to surpass 45 million tonnes of output.
During his tenure, NMDC has recorded its highest-ever turnover and net worth, enhanced digital and technical infrastructure, and resumed operations at India’s only mechanised diamond mine. He has also played a significant role in the commissioning of the NMDC Steel Plant in Bastar, which stands as a landmark achievement for the company.
Beyond domestic milestones, Mukherjee has spearheaded NMDC’s expansion into international markets, including gold mining ventures in Australia. His leadership has positioned the Navratna company to achieve its ambitious goal of reaching 100 million tonnes of mining capacity by 2030.
