As the situation worsened, with eight out of twelve lavatories becoming unusable, the airline made the decision to divert back to Chicago rather than continue flying over the Atlantic.
According to Air India, an investigation revealed that polythene bags, rags, and clothing items had been flushed down the toilets, leading to a blockage. A spokesperson stated that “the decision to divert was taken entirely in the interest of passenger comfort and safety.” Upon landing, Air India said, affected passengers were provided with hotel accommodation and alternative flight options to complete their journey to Delhi.
The airline noted that similar incidents have occurred in the past, with objects like blankets, innerwear, and diapers being improperly disposed of in lavatories.
