India’s edible oil consumption: The numbers
India consumes 260 lakh tonnes of edible oil annually, with 160 lakh tonnes imported. The country’s per capita consumption stands at 17 kg per person per year, though it varies across regions.
Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Maharashtra report higher consumption at 28 kg per person, attributed to factors such as affordability and dietary habits.
North India consumes 18-20 kg per person annually, while South India averages 16-17 kg.
Eastern states record the lowest intake, at 13-14 kg per person, according to data from the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA).
Consumption in developed nations is significantly higher. The European average stands at 35 kg per person, while the United States exceeds 40 kg. In contrast, South Africa records a lower 10-12 kg per person.
Modi’s call for a national movement
Encouraging people to adopt healthier eating habits, PM Modi urged citizens to consciously reduce oil usage at home. “You should decide that you will use 10% less oil every month. By making small changes in our eating habits, we can build a healthier and disease-free future,” he said.
To drive this message further, the Prime Minister nominated 10 prominent personalities on February 24, urging them to promote awareness and inspire others to cut down on edible oil. He also encouraged them to nominate 10 more people each, turning the initiative into a nationwide movement.
