A retired IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, Das has over 42 years of experience in public service, focusing on finance, taxation, investment, and infrastructure. He was the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India and represented India as G20 Sherpa while serving on the 15th Finance Commission.
With a Master’s Degree from St Stephen’s College under the Delhi University, Das served as the special commissioner and commissioner of revenue administration for the Tamil Nadu government before moving to RBI.
Prior to his tenure in government, Das was also a non-executive director at Indian Bank for three years ended December 2012. He was the director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation(ONGC) and the director at Life Insurance Corporation(LIC) too.
During his six years leading RBI — Das ranks second for RBI governor with the longest tenure — he brought a marked change in the way the central bank communicated. “Earlier governors used to be a lot more cryptic, a lot more private, and not so expansive, in terms of laying out their thoughts,” Aseem Dhru, Managing Director and CEO at SBFC Finance told CNBC-TV18 in December when Das made way for Sanjay Malhotra on the hot seat.
