Amazon MGM Studios, alongside Wilson and Broccoli, has formed a new joint venture that will co-own James Bond’s intellectual property rights. However, Amazon MGM will now have the final say on creative decisions, including future films and potential franchise expansions beyond the big screen.
“With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects,” Wilson said in a statement. “Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”

The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed, though the deal is expected to be finalised later this year.
A new era for bond
Amazon’s interest in Bond was clear when it acquired MGM Studios in 2022 for $6.1 billion. Since then, tensions have reportedly simmered between Amazon MGM and the Bond producers over the franchise’s direction, particularly following the conclusion of Daniel Craig’s tenure with 2021’s No Time to Die.
For the first time in Bond history, a Broccoli will not have the sole authority to greenlight a 007 film or choose the next actor to don the iconic tuxedo. Amazon MGM is also exploring ways to expand the brand beyond the traditional film format.
“We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide,” said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. “We are honored to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”
The broccoli legacy
The Bond franchise has been a family affair since producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli secured the rights to Ian Fleming’s novels and launched Dr. No in 1962. Over 25 films later, the series has amassed $7.6 billion at the global box office.
In 1995, Broccoli passed the reins to his daughter, Barbara, and stepson, Wilson. While both have remained heavily involved, the 64-year-old Broccoli has taken the lead in recent years as Wilson, now 83, gradually moved into retirement.
“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli,” Broccoli said in a statement. “I have had the honor of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”
What’s next for Bond?
A key point in Amazon’s acquisition of MGM was its commitment to releasing future Bond films in theatres. However, the franchise’s new home within an e-commerce and streaming giant has sparked concerns among fans. Some worry that Bond, like other billion-dollar franchises such as Disney’s Star Wars and Marvel, could face creative struggles due to corporate oversight and franchise fatigue.
Broccoli herself has spoken about the challenges facing the film industry. In an interview last year, she warned against playing it too safe.
“People are playing it very safe,” she said. “I think in times of crisis like this, you’ve got to be brave.”
With Amazon MGM now steering the ship, the future of James Bond is set for a dramatic reinvention—one that will test the franchise’s ability to evolve while staying true to its legacy.
