A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Kargil, Ladakh, at 2.50 am, with tremors reported across Jammu and Kashmir, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake was recorded at a depth of 15 km.
The NCS confirmed the details in a post on X, stating: “EQ of M: 5.2, On: 14/03/2025 02:50:05 IST, Lat: 33.37 N, Long: 76.76 E, Depth: 15 Km, Location: Kargil, Ladakh.” Ladakh and Leh fall under Seismic Zone IV, making them highly vulnerable to earthquakes.
Meanwhile, around 6 am, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck West Kameng in Arunachal Pradesh. The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 km. The NCS shared the details in a post on X, stating: “EQ of M: 4.0, On: 14/03/2025 06:01:28 IST, Lat: 27.26 N, Long: 92.27 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: West Kameng, Arunachal Pradesh.”
India’s seismic zoning categorises regions into four levels—Zone V, IV, III, and II, with Zone V being the most prone to earthquakes and Zone II the least as per the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
