The reduction in vegetarian thali prices was driven by a 28% fall in tomato prices, which dropped from ₹32/kg to ₹23/kg. Additionally, LPG prices saw an 11% decrease, falling from ₹903 per 14.2 kg cylinder to ₹803. However, the increase in the prices of onions (11%), potatoes (16%), and vegetable oils (18%) partly offset these reductions.
Non-veg thalis costlier in Feb
In contrast, the cost of a non-vegetarian thali went up due to a 15% rise in broiler chicken prices. This increase was largely due to a low base last year when prices were lower due to excess supply. Additionally, the price of maize, a key ingredient in poultry feed, increased by 6%, further driving up costs.
On a monthly basis, the prices of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis declined by about 5% in February 2025. This was due to lower prices of key ingredients like onions, potatoes, and tomatoes, as well as a decrease in broiler prices, mainly caused by reduced demand following a bird flu scare in southern India.
Overall, while the cost of preparing a vegetarian thali fell slightly on a year-on-year basis, non-vegetarian thali prices saw an uptick due to rising poultry costs.
