In an X post, Lalit Modi also charged the media for spreading “fake news” and claimed he bolstered its readership. He also said the only thing he did single-handedly was create the IPL.
The fugitive’s statement came after his lawyer Mehmood Abdi confirmed to the media that Lalit Modi had indeed put an application in the Indian High Commission in London to surrender his Indian passport and acquire the citizenship of Vanuatu.
His lawyer was also quoted as saying that there were no cases against him and that no court had charged him.
“Lalit Modi has put an application in the Indian High Commission in London to surrender his Indian passport because he has taken citizenship of Vanuatu. It is required for people to obtain citizenship in another country. They want to pursue the cases, there is no case in fact,” his lawyer Mehmood Abdi told news agency PTI.
“All the cases that are being talked about in 18 years, no court has charged him, and there has been no chargesheet either by any agency,” he said.
Quoting his lawyer’s statement, Lalit Modi on Saturday wrote on X, “True facts. No court of law in India has a case pending against me personally. It’s only media fiction.”
“Fifteen years have gone. But they keep saying we are going after me – more than welcome to. But first file an application for ANY WRONGDOING. INSTEAD OF JUST IMAGINING I HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH SOMETHING WRONG. This is called fake news. In other words keep creating fake news so I bloster your readership or viewership,” (sic), his post read.

“Only thing that I have done single handedly is create a global loved product called IPL which you lap it up like there is no tomorrow. Which none of you thought of and I mean none of you can create or will ever create. So I know what I have done. You know what you have done ? GUESS NOT,” (sic), he added.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also on Friday confirmed Lalit Modi acquiring the citizenship of Vanuatu – a South Pacific Island nation.
He left India in 2010 and is learnt to have been living in London.
The former IPL chief is wanted by Indian law enforcement agencies in connection with allegations that he was involved in the embezzlement of crores of rupees during his stint as the top boss of the IPL.
