While the foreign investor sell-off initially began due to stretched valuations and concerns over slowing economic growth, it intensified today because of a sharp sell-off in the United States (US) markets and heightened concerns over potential trade tariffs from US President Donald Trump targeting Mexico and Canada.
On Thursday night, the Nasdaq fell over 550 points, and although the Dow Jones ended 200 points lower, it corrected over 650 points from the sessions’ highs. The fall in the Nasdaq today was triggered by a 8.5% drop in shares of Nvidia post its earnings. The Nasdaq sell-off has rubbed-off on the Nifty IT index, which is the top sectoral loser in today’s trading session, declining as much as 4%.
Adding to the investor worries were Trump’s renewed tariff threats, particularly targeting Mexico and Canada, key trade partners of the US of a 25% reciprocal tariff rate. This rekindled fears of a trade war and its potential impact on global supply chains. Trump’s stance on imposing tariffs on these neighbouring countries raised alarms among investors, particularly in industries reliant on cross-border trade.
