The allegations emerged following a Moneylife report that exposed financial irregularities and suspected corruption within the bank. According to the report, corporate loans of up to ₹25 crore were sanctioned without notifying branch managers. Many of these loans reportedly turned into non-performing assets (NPAs) within a year, allegedly due to fund mismanagement and diversion. This prompted the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to take stringent action against the bank’s operations.
One of the most high-profile cases in the controversy involved ₹18 crore loan to Zinta. The report said the loan was supposedly “written off” without adhering to standard recovery procedures.
In response, the actress issued a statement saying, “More than 12 years ago, I had an overdraft facility with the New India Cooperative Bank. More than 10 years ago, I repaid in full the entire dues in respect of this overdraft facility, and the account stands closed.”
She wrote on X, “No I operate my social media accounts my self and shame on you for promoting FAKE NEWS! No one wrote off anything or any loan for me. I’m shocked that a political party or their representative is promoting fake news and indulging in vile gossip and click baits using my name and images. For the record a loan was taken and FULLY PAID BACK – over 10 years ago. Hope this clarifies and helps so there are no misunderstandings in the future.”

The report claimed that more than 80 senior staff members were allegedly forced to resign in 2019.
The Congress Kerala unit thaked the actress for clarification. “We are glad to accept mistakes if we have made any. Good to know you’re managing your own account, unlike other celebs who have handed theirs over to the notorious IT cell,” the Congress Kerala wrote to Preity Zinta.
